Ageism

Post by RedRosa »

Here we go with all the Madonna endless ageism and BS. This one will be long.

I’m going to say this as precise and clearly as possible.

Do we have these discussions about the men? No. We celebrate Mick Jagger’s still slim, athletic body and rage about his performances ( or not.) we say Steve Tyler is singing great.

Madonna, like her or not ( and I did not like her at all when I worked with her but my job wasn’t about liking her or not and I did my job professionally) is still very relevant. Again, relevance is what we discuss about women, rarely men.

I read an article yesterday about Blondie’s performance at Glastonbury. The entire article discussed every aspect of her outfit in detail and how her face looked good in her sunglasses. Nothing-- and I mean nothing -- was said about her band mates. How did the band play? What songs were particularly great? Nothing.

I'm 68. I dye my hair. I wear make-up. My body is part of my self expression and quite frankly I LIKE my body with all its flaws more now than when I was younger. This body survived unspeakable things. It has been up five pounds, down five pounds and I still respect all the years it’s given me the memories it has. I celebrate it. I, like the rest of you, am human, sexual and vibrantly alive.

Can the conversations about a female performers ‘relevance’ please stop? Please? So do me a favor, when discussing the "worth" of a female artist, can we stop using words like relevant? It’s a cover for discussing her age.

I don’t care if you like her.

I don’t care if you listen to her and we all know her behavior has been bizarre.

But to the artists she’s recording duets and tracks with, they think she’s relevant enough and the music is selling. The audiences are there and waiting.

I’m not apologizing for ranting about this.

Enough is enough.

Let’s celebrate the music and the beauty of women who are easily breaking records for career longevity these days.

Why the fuck not?

If I can now live to be 100 easily I’m going to live doing what I love. Isn’t it about the freedom to do what we love?

A worthy rant indeed.

I love the expression "vibrantly alive" - so few people are

Her behaviour through the years have always been bizarre. It's media driven. Lets just face it, the woman is a great business woman. She knows how to make money, she's talented and very driven. I've always been a fan and I always will be. I agree, lets celebrate these iconic women instead of berating them. Madonna opened doors for female sexuality, lgbtq rights etc.
