I would like to request that the option to contact each other by email via the profile is removed. Part of the appeal of shybi1.0 was that it was so anonymous and easy to hide. If people are worried that other shybi members are going to turn up in their inbox it may put them off joining, or staying. Anyone object?

I left that option on specifically because so many people lost contact with others when the old forum went down, and it's a way to contact someone off-site without the person having to give their email. But I don't want people getting spammed, feeling that their personal life is being invaded, or being concerned about stuff coming through on a shared email or something.

You can turn off this setting in your user control panel under Board Preferences -> Edit Global Settings. I think https://shybi.net/forums/ucp.php?i=179 will take you to this directly.

If there is still strong feeling that this should be disabled, I can do that.

I don't have a problem with an email option. I think it's great and members can always disable it if it doesn't suit them.

I'm really thinking about users safety. Say for example a member may email a member about an issue discussed in here and it lands in her inbox without warning. That inbox could be shared with her abusive partner and we could inadvertantly put her at increased risk. Domestic abuse is life or death at times. Even if it's not that extreme, she may access her emails on a shared computer at work or at home and she may be outed or worse unintentionally. I just think we may be unintentionally putting users at risk by offering the email option.

Just remembering that users of shybi1.0 were strongly cautioned about contact with members off forum. Can anyone remember the reason for that? I mean, clearly people did contact each other otherwise this new forum wouldn't have been set up, but there might been a reason for it and this may influence our decision about the email button.

Of course we can DM each other on this site and there is no way of controlling if people want to give each other their contact details that way, but this is by arrangement with the user, and she wouldn't have emails randomly dropping into her inbox. This is safer I think.

If I would have an abuser or possessive partner, I wouldn't use my personal email to sign up here. Only one leg of mine is out of the closet, thus, I am very careful and used a separate email in signing up here. I do not access the site on work computer. I learnt very important lesson in the past so I'm very cautious since then. But, again, not everyone can be as careful as me. Geek1, thank you for citing that scenario. I think you've made a valid point - safeguarding the members.

I've kept the option available. It gives a way for people to send stuff to people off-board without the recipient having to disclose their contact info, which I feel enhances safe connections overall.

However, I've changed it to be off by default, so people will have to choose to opt-in. This applies to new members - existing members should go to https://shybi.net/forums/ucp.php?i=179 to change preferences.

When I update the registration page, I will include something encouraging people not to use a shared email address to register if they have safety concerns.

We might have the ability to “react” to posts with emojis but I’m not seeing it.
You can now "like" posts using the thumbs up button.
